As the scene opens, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are sitting in their room discussing the fate of their king, King Duncan. Macbeth is standing by the window, peering out the window at the fog covered valley.

Lady Macbeth. It has to be done. Our king is weak and the countryside is begging to be led by a strong and powerful man. You are that man. I know in the back of your mind you know that this has to be done. Tonight is the perfect night to do such a thing.
Macbeth. Are you nuts? That's crazy. There is no way in hell that I am going to murder the most respected man in out land. For Christ sake the man just made me the Thane of Cawdor. What else do you want from the man? I think you have some major issues!
Lady Macbeth. Why do you mock me so? Is it not obvious that I am merely wanting the best for you? No one will ever know it was you. Your secret is safe in my heart.
Macbeth. I should God damn hope so.
