Henry David Thoreau was born in 1817 in Concord, where his father, John, strived in many occupations until becoming a moderately successful pencil maker. Henry was a bashful and withdrawn youth who had spent most of his time roaming the great outdoors. Thoreau's older siblings were both schoolteachers. It was decided that their brother should go to Harvard College, as had his grandfather before him, they contributed from their teaching salaries to help pay his expenses. Henry was never happy with the teaching methods used at Harvard. However, he was fond of Harvard's library, which was the first adequate collection of books he had access to. As an aspiring writer he had been keeping a daily journal and writing poetry. Thoreau also published essays and reviews.
