All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Remarque, is a blend of artistic beauty and despair. He portrays his soldiers to be inexperienced and for the most part very young. Trench warfare sums up the hardships of World War I, as the two sides dug into the beautiful land, thus destroying it. In the novel, there are many instances in which Remarque characterizes beauty and despair. At times, both themes are present only a few paragraphs, lines, or words away. It is this interwoven theme between beauty and despair that makes this work a classic.
Remarque uses despair freely and openly in All Quiet on the Western Front. The reader sees an instance of despair when Paul Baumer explains the front. "To me the front is a mysterious whirlpool.
