In his time, Bret was one of the most sought after authors in the country. Today, Bret Harte is known as one of the classic writers of the Western pulp fiction genre.
     Francis Brett Harte, his full name which he carried until he became famous, was born on August 25, 1836 in Albany New York to his parents Henry and Elizabeth.  Although Bret’s father was a school teacher, the future author’s education was spotty and irregular, since the family moved around quiet a bit to keep from the high cost of tuition. Bret only attended school until the age of 13, but that didn’t stop him from adopting a love of literature and books, as he managed to have his first small pieces published at only 11 years old.
